Etchells Irish Championship Etchells Irish Championship

Another update. This past weekend I raced in the Etchels Irish Championship at Howth Yacht Club. Great racing, great weather, and I even beat Dennis Conner in one of the races.

Now I’m doing the tourist thing in Dublin for a few days, and then I’ll be going out to Galway on the west coast for a couple days. And then its back to Howth for one more regatta, the Etchells European Championship.

Like horses in their stables

This past weekend I got the chance to go back to Michigan and race with some old (and new) friends on the Mumm 36 “Vanguard.”

Great race. Extremely fast and relatively uneventful besides a few dozen sail changes. Many a record was shattered this year. I beat my personal best by about 10 hours by finishing at 3AM on Monday morning.

I’ve set up a Flickr photoset with my photos from Boat Night and the island.

Light Air Light Air

Well, this past weekend I had the pleasure of racing in the Lake Huron Doublehanded Challenge with my father on his C&C 41.

The wind was “light and variable,” we spent most of the race drifting, and we didn’t finish until Monday at noon, but it was an enjoyable race overall. It was nice to escape Pittsburgh and get some time on the water. Plus we got 3rd in our class.

Window Office

So since I haven’t been blogging, what have I been doing instead?

Window Office

Well, as usual, I’ve managed to find way too many things to fill my plate. Summer semester was supposed to be a breeze but I’ve taken up some “extra-curricular activities” that have kept me really busy.

For one, I’ve joined Red Team, Carnegie Mellon’s entry in the DARPA Grand Challenge. Along with hacking C for the computer-controlled gimbal upon which the machine’s primary LIDAR sensor is mounted, I’ve also been recruited for lots of other little tasks like taking photos, administering Linux servers, and mucking around with carbon fiber.

I’ve also managed to squeeze in some sailing this summer. Last weekend I did Detroit NOODs, and I’ll also be doing the Lake Huron Doublehanded Challenge with my father and the Port Huron – Mackinac race with some friends.

All that along with my practicum project (think of it as a “thesis project” for my masters program), my independent study, and a miscellaneous class has kept me pretty busy.

No rest for the weary…

The UofM Sailing Team was featured in the “Sports Monday” edition of todays Michigan Daily:

You may have seen him at the last Festifall. No, it wasn’t the guy with the Michigan crew shirt on, holding up a huge oar and a sign saying, “Big, strong athletes wanted here.” It was the other guy. The one with the 5-foot sailing boom – quite a bit smaller than a crew oar = and a sign reading, “Small athlete? Try Michigan Sailing.” This was the tactic of fifth-year senior Craig Capilla, along with other members of the Michigan sailing team, used last September to reel in new recruits.

Yeah. Craig kicks ass.
