I didn’t plan on doing another beer review so quickly, but this beer has been a dream of mine for quite some time, so I figure it’s worthy.

I’m back in Ann Arbor, MI to recruit at UofM’s spring job fair. We decided to hit up one of my favorite local establishments, Ashley’s Pub, an excellent beer bar on State Street. I had the excellent “chicken curry fries” and after dinner decided to splurge on a beer I’ve had my eye on for years, Dogfish Head’s 120 Minute IPA.

Whoa. What a beer. I was expecting just an extra-hoppy IPA, but I was surprised with an amazingly smooth beer with almost barleywine qualities. It has an excellent, very strong, almost fruity aroma and looks awesome in a glass. Everything about this beer is strong, yet refined, from the aroma to the flavor to the color. With over 120 IBU and 21% alcohol content, that’s not surprising. Think of it as a barleywine with more “heart”. The hoppyness is much more subtle, and it sneaks up on you about halfway through.

Definately a beer to drink again. It ages well, so I may pick up a few bottles to keep around for special occasions.

(Picture borrowed from Lil’ El’s CC‘ed photostream on Flick.)

From the message “17 Reasons Not to Slit your Wrists,” on Michael Moore’s email list, forwarded to me by a friend:

7. Once again we are reminded that the buckeye is a nut, and not just any old nut — a poisonous nut. A great nation was felled by a poisonous nut. May Ohio State pay dearly this Saturday when it faces Michigan.

The University of Michigan plays Ohio State on November 20th, not November 6th. Maybe you were thinking Michigan State, who is playing Ohio State this Saturday. Or perhaps you got football confused with soccer, since the University of Michigan men’s soccer team is the only UofM team playing Ohio State this weekend.

Mr. Moore, you are from Michigan, right? Most Michiganders don’t make the mistake of confusing UofM with MSU. Thanks for the shout-out though…

Daniel Adams finally hit the nail square on the head in todays Michigan Daily:

When I heard that there was a new student group on campus, Student Voices in Action, I was excited. In response to the proposed cuts to several key student services, SVA coordinated large student protests on the Diag and outside the Fleming Administration Building. Shockingly, they had a coherent message. They oppose the changes to the Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center. They oppose funding cuts to the Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Affairs. They want Trotter House to finally get the funding to renovate. They demand increased student representation at the administrative level. Check, check and check. To top it off, they have a great slogan: “Royster cut student services and all I got was this lousy T-shirt.” I was so excited, my little liberal heart started going pitter-patter.

Then they broke it in two.

After meeting with several of their organizers, I realized that some of their other assertions range from the highly debatable to the completely outrageous. They claim the University isn’t committed to diversity, despite a multi-year, multi-million dollar defense of its race-conscious admission policies. They want the University to give students more than a say in the administrative process, with veto power, yes, veto power, over decisions regarding student affairs.

The SVA basically spat in the face of the administration on Monday. They exist for the same reason as 70% of the other “student groups” on this campus: to make unreasonable demands for the single purpose of getting rejected and gaining more ammo to generate more press for their radical messages. Drives me nuts.

Goodspeed Update has Mary Sue Coleman’s response.
