I have a simple solution for bookshelf size speaker on the cheap (sorry no illustrations but I'm sure you'll figure out what I mean). I bought 2 CAT SCRATCH STANDS from WalMart (@$9.00/ea.), replaced the play toy on top with a 9x9 inch piece of plywood .... and that's it!! Easily holds up a hefty bookshelf speaker at a nice height and the twine trunk of the stand looks kinda funky.

Brilliant idea! I picked up a pair of IKEA floor lamps for only €6.99 (~
10.47 $) . To cover the holes at the top i found some rubber caps for chair legs.

@Lyn -

I screwed a phillips pan-head (rounded top) screw partially into the stand itself, leaving it sticking out enough that I could hang my speakers on the post via the keyhole opening on the back.

If you look at your speakers and see a "keyhole" opening on the back (it'll look like a hole with a slot sticking out of the top of it, with room inside for a screw), you'll be able to do the same. Otherwise, I'd look at building a small platform on top to set your speaker on.

How did you attach the speaker??? I can't find one of my stands after moving. Mine is by "furniture Works" and the pole is height adjustable, with a place on top to set on the "bookcase" speaker and tighten the width so the speaker won't fall off. I'm not following how to attach the rear speaker to the pole. THANKS for sharing your marvelous creativity!
